Saint Bernadette Soubirous
The asthmatic miller's daughter to whom the Immaculate Conception appeared eighteen times at Massabielle in 1858, and who then hid herself in a convent at Nevers.

Biography
A family in extreme poverty
Marie-Bernarde Soubirous was the eldest of nine children of François, a miller ruined by debt, and Louise. The family lived in the cachot, a former single-room jail. Bernadette suffered from asthma and cholera, was unschooled and spoke only the local Bigourdan dialect.
The apparitions of 1858
From 11 February to 16 July 1858 a lady appeared eighteen times in the grotto of Massabielle, calling for penance, prayer for sinners and the building of a chapel. On 25 March the lady declared, 'I am the Immaculate Conception' — a dogma defined only four years earlier and unknown in that phrase to the girl. On 25 February Bernadette dug in the mud and uncovered the spring that still flows.
Hidden life at Nevers
After long interrogations by civil and Church authorities, and the approval of the apparitions by the bishop of Tarbes in 1862, Bernadette entered the Sisters of Charity at Nevers in 1866. She worked as infirmarian and sacristan, endured tuberculosis of the bone and repeated humiliations, and died at thirty-five saying 'Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for me, a poor sinner.' Her body was found incorrupt at the exhumations of 1909, 1919 and 1925.

Seventy healings at Lourdes have been officially recognised by the Church after examination by the international medical committee; the shrine's medical bureau continues to assess claims.
