Biography
Son of thunder
James and his brother John, fishermen with their father Zebedee, were called while mending nets and left everything at once (Mark 1:19-20). Jesus named them Boanerges, 'sons of thunder', for their fiery temperament; they once wished to call down fire on a Samaritan village and asked for the first places in the Kingdom.
Witness of the inner circle
With Peter and John he alone witnessed the raising of Jairus's daughter, the Transfiguration on Tabor and the agony in Gethsemane. To his request for glory Jesus answered with the promise of the chalice: 'The cup that I drink you will drink' (Mark 10:39).
Martyrdom and Compostela
About the year 44 Herod Agrippa I had him killed by the sword in Jerusalem, the first apostle to give his life. A Spanish tradition, documented from the seventh century onward, holds that he had preached in Hispania and that his body was brought to Galicia; the tomb at Compostela, identified in the ninth century, became after Rome and Jerusalem the third great pilgrimage of Christendom. The Church presents this Spanish tradition as venerable devotion rather than as verified history.
